Implement Monzo & Starling Bank

luke1991luke1991 Member Posts: 5

These 2 banks are becoming a bit of a phenomenon in the UK, taking over the industry, but Wave does not support them.

Could you look into implementing these at some point.

agreed, Starling is now my main account and the lack of support is the only thing that has me not using wave currently.

    Hi there,
Thanks for sharing you banking request.
Wave works with a specialist banking data integration partner to connect more than 10,000 banks worldwide. We do not, however, directly control when new banks are added to our integration; this is driven by overall demand, and how cooperative (or otherwise!) a bank is to enabling our integration partner to make a connection.
You can read more about the wider landscape of bank integrations, and alternatives if your bank is not connected, in this article in our Help Center.
    Hope that's some help.

Hi Paul, if you could pass on the feedback to the third party or give us information on which third party it is that is used so we can contact them ourselves, that would be helpful.

    Hello @luke1991 ,
The Help Center article I referenced explains about our banking integration partner. Please note, however, they are not considering individual user requests - it is the aggregate of demand from their many customers such as ourselves, other accounting software vendors, etc, that drive this.
As explained in the article, the useful thing you can do is talk to your bank about what they are (or are not) doing to make sure you can access data from your bank account in the tools of your choice.
Thanks in advance for anything you can do to push your bank on this.

This is disappointing, one of our business bank accounts is a Starling account so I'm desperate for this integratopn too. Currently I am forced to download .csv files on my phone, manipulate the downloaded file on my pc (Wave doesn't recognise the dates in the download correctly as they are in UK format and Wave needs US format), then import into Wave.....it's far too drawn out a process and so obviously only worth doing once a month when the the statement is issued.

I am guessing the lack of integration is due to Starling not offering "Internet Banking", this instead being "App banking" only - if Wave can't access Starling Servers using an internet portal (because there is no portal) then I can see why it's not possible to pull transactions.

Not sure whether this is a Starling problem, a Wave problem, or a Integration partner problem, but please fix this.

Ps. Can you also look into implementing an option for import of .CSV with non-US format dates. I appreciate Wave is a Canadian company, but a lot of us live overseas too where the date format differs! :-)

Starling actually offers an API for open banking, as does Monzo.

    Totally agree.👍👍👍

Wave needs to integrate with Starling!

The only reason I’m not currently using Wave is because they haven’t added it yet. I would like to use Wave, but have had to find other accounting software :(

There are so many people who would appreciate it and be more likely to use Wave. One main reason being that both Starling and Wave offer free accounts. Starling is now growing exponentially, please get in on the rising trend and make the most of it’s users who will be looking for accounting software to use in their businesses.

An opportunity. Please add before Starling customers go elsewhere! If you link with Starling you will probably grow exponentially too!

Please add as your next integration. I think based on current trends it would be a very wise move

Hi @Elmswood, you are correct in your summary of the current issue with an integration to Starling bank - no internet banking. Integrations such as these are something that our Banking Team is always looking to improve on. You did also mention that you are having some difficulty getting your CSV files into Wave so you may be interested in looking into a new feature that has just been rolled out - Wave Connect.
Wave Connect is a Google Sheets integration that helps you:

    • Download your invoice, customer, product, and report data from Wave.
    • Upload invoice, customer, product, and transaction data onto Wave

To learn more about this integration, including how to set it up, I recommend visiting this Help Center article on the topic.

@luke1991 @lara_ami, Hey guys, as I mentioned above, our Banking Integrations Team is always looking for better connections. The reason that we cannot currently offer this connection is based on the third party data provider that we require to draw these connections. We rely solely on which connections they have access to. For the meantime, you may be interested in checking out our Wave Connect feature I mentioned above!

Can i add my request for Starling (and Monzo) integration.

Starling is awesome and we really would love integration - i have made the request via the banking portal form but had no feedback.

Starling is already full open so I cannot see why it is different from all the other banks you have and the number of users of Starling is growing at a tremendous pace

  • Ryan_WRyan_W Member Posts: 452 ✭✭✭

@trelimon thanks for tossing your +1 into this! Zoe's advice still applies in this case, as we use a third party vendor for facilitating these connections, so hopefully this is on the horizon!

  • trelimontrelimon Member Posts: 15

Using a 3rd party vendor like Yodlee is a bit old school - Starling as all UK banks has implemented 'Open Banking' which means you have direct access to their APIs - quicker, safer and more info

Agree with the above, you can get a direct bank feed from Starling - please look into implementing direct support for this. Many thanks.

Hi all, thanks again for your feedback! I took some time to chat with our Product Managers today so I wanted to share my findings. At this time, we have no plans to integrate directly with Starling. Direct integration with banks is complex even if it is easily built or facilitated. There are a lot of considerations involved. This is part of the reason why we work with a specialist provider to provide this service.

Yodlee does connect with some financial institutions via API. Our recommendation would be to advocate to Starling who can build a bridge with Yodlee and get you easy access to that information within Wave.

That’s very disappointing. I plan to switch my banking to starling and so looks like I will need to switch away from wave as well if there is no support here for starling. The bank account itself will take priority over accounting software.

I would like to add my +1 to this. Just moving all my business banking over to Starling and would prefer not to have to change accounting software!
  • WildIsleWildIsle Member Posts: 1

Also considering a move to Starling - Wave would do well to listen! Google appears to show that Starling were also keen to explore this - can't access the link as they've since shutdown their forum...

  • JamieDJamieD Administrator Posts: 1,156 admin

@billysal @WildIsle Thanks again for your feedback here -- as we still don't have any immediate plans regarding the specific integration here, we will continue to review all options for our users and see what can be done about Starling Bank. With that said, you will need to continue uploading your bank statements manually for the time being.

I'm considering leaving wave now due to this not happening. Starling seem to make it very easy for developers to connect to their API https://developer.starlingbank.com/

I'm aware you at wave use a 3rd party service, and so are not wholly responsible, but I'm sure you can also put pressure as users of their system.

Put another way, my accounting has now gone seriously downhill since moving to starling, as it's just another thing I need to do in my day when I'm already swamped. I don't attribute this to starling. Will most likely be moving on to Xero, which is a shame as it doesn't seem like something that can't be fixed. I'd even built an integration myself if I was given permission, being a developer.

Hi @lewistaylor . I understand your frustrations here. From what I understand, you are correct in saying that we would have to go through our Banking Partner instead of our API & Integrations team. In terms of actually having them implement it, we do what we can, but it is ultimately our banking partner's decision. As I said, I totally acknowledge your frustrations here and my fingers are crossed that this connection will come soon.

I feel like we haven't had any positive confirmation that this has been suggested to yoddler, other than suggesting that we submit a request on their website.

It would be nice to know if Wave had any communication with yoddle about Starling
  • lewistaylorlewistaylor Member Posts: 3

I realise Wave is a Canadian company, and I'm sure North America is your primary concern, but giving a heads up, a lot of UK banking customers are going to switch to these two banks mentioned. They've done some incredible marketing, and have a great product.

I would seriously recommend pushing Yoddle, because otherwise, I would imagine people will start moving away. Xero have already managed to become fully integrated, and the monthly cost is enough for me to consider moving if it makes my day to day more east.

And just to clarify, I love wave. You have an awesome product, and if you did do payroll in the UK, I would pay for that feature. You're the first app in a while that I would pay to use and can't physically do so!

But this is definitely something that would make me move if not fixed soonish.

I'm really annoyed to find this out. I've just signed up and tried to connect and obviously can't find starling bank.

Gah what a waste of time, setting everything up has been.

  • JamieDJamieD Administrator Posts: 1,156 admin

@luke1991 @lewistaylor @mrsjprice We still don't have any plans right now for an integration with Starling bank (as you know within the thread itself). I do want to let you know that we do hear you though.. this isn't something that is being ignored and we understand that it's important our users to have this particular connection. We will continue to update you with the information once we have it available (in this thread).

  • lewistaylorlewistaylor Member Posts: 3

Being a developer myself, I've DM'd 2 members of staff saying we will help with the build and have heard nothing back, no response.

Very frustrating that even in offering a hand in trying to make this happen there's no movement.

It's onto Xero for me I'm afraid.

  • JamieDJamieD Administrator Posts: 1,156 admin

@lewistaylor For us to maintain consistency across the board, we stick with using a bank partner since we deal with thousands of other banks/connections. When we maintain this consistency, it allows us to troubleshoot issues or escalate them to the appropriate party in the most efficient way. I appreciate your admiration and skill set of being a developer/offering your assistance in helping us build this out, but it's not something that we are looking to move forward with. When we have more of an idea of what this would look like (in terms of the actual integration of Starling Bank) -- we will update our users asking for it on this thread.

I am also very keen on this Starling Bank connection. I've only just joined Wave and I thought it looked like an excellent product. However, was very disappointed when I couldn't find Starling or Monzo.

I'd love to use Wave and Starling together. But this seems a bit anti-productive when having to upload CSV files, which I read above don't work with UK dates...

  • awassallawassall Member Posts: 5

This would be amazing. They are both very popular banks and uploading the csv every month is getting a bit annoying.

  • sirgadersirgader Member Posts: 1
I fully agree. Why can’t you influence your banking partner to integrate with Starling via OpenBanking API. Starling shares your philosophy - they provide free business banking for sole traders and small firms. I’m sure you could make it happen.

can you confirm if exporting and uploading a csv file from starling works with wave? i appreciate its annoying and not ideal, but does it work?

I'd like to add my +1 to this thread. I use Starling and would love to see an integration with it.
