Entering Journal Transactions

Am I alone in thinking that the new screen display for entering journal transactions is a big step backwards?
2/3rds of the screen on the left is taken up displaying previously-entered journals. I'm not sure convinced that this provides any real benefit, but in practical terms it only leaves 1/3rd of the screen on the right 'squashed up' and available for actually entering transactions.
Also, it's not always totally clear whether you are making a debit, or a credit transaction.
I think somebody's artistic style has prevailed over substance?
