Deactivating categories

Is there a way to deactivate categories so they will not show as option for new transactions but will stay on old transactions?

    Oh yeah, that's pretty simple. in your chart of accounts page, track down that category. Click on the pencil and you can archive it there. It'll do exactly what you're saying.
